The Shield Charger is a defensive weapon in Ratchet & Clank: Going Commando, and can be seen as a spiritual successor to the Defensive Drone Device. Like that weapon, the Shield Charger is never really equipped. Rather, it is activated if the player selects it from the Weapons Menu or the Quick Select. When activated, the Shield Charger generates a spherical shield around Ratchet that protects him from enemy shots. Enemies who come into contact with the shield will also recieve a nasty shock. After dealing and recieving a certain amount of damage, the shield deactivates. The shield later upgrades into the Tesla Barrier.
There are some flaws to the Shield Charger and the way it works. The main one is that the player recieves no warning whatsoever as to when the Shield Charger will deactivate. This can be frustrating when Ratchet is on low health, or the player is trying to sustain the Bolt Multiplier, as a hit that deactivates the Shield Charger counts as a hit against him, thus it resets the multiplier. The second flaw is that the weapon can be a pain to upgrade because it deals little damage, and the player had to make contact with an enemy in order to dish it out. A device similar to the Shield Charger was planned to be in Ratchet & Clank: Tools Of Destruction, called the Plasma Shield. Although it was later cut for reasons unknown.
Up Your ArsenalThe shield charger makes a return in Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal, Ratchet is able to buy the weapon from Slim Cognito on Planet Aquatos. Although unlike the Lava Gun, the weapon isn't different from it's Ratchet & Clank: Going Commando counterpart, apart from the color of the shield. Slim recives it once the player lands on Mylon. Like the other four returning Megacorp weapons, this weapon recieves the V1-V5 upgrading system from Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal. Like in it's Ratchet & Clank: Going Commando appearance, it is also a very time consuming weapon to upgrade.
Also in similarity to the other Megacorp Weapons in Up Your Arsenal, the Shield Charger can be acquired for free if there is a Going Commando Save on the Memory Card in Slot 1 where the player bought the weapon in that game. This can be quite the money saver at the late stage of the game this weapon appears in.
- Even with Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal, each version of the Shield Charger and Tesla Barrier has the shield appearing in a different colour. The GC Shield Charger, is blue, and the Tesla Barrier is Turquoise. The V1 UYA Shield Charger is Red, the V2 version is Orange, V3 Green, and V4 Aqua. The V5 Tesla Barrier appears in white.
- The design of the Shield Charger and Tesla Barrier devices (for lack of a better term) look similar to the Time Bomb weapon from Ratchet & Clank: A Crack in Time.
